Indigenous Peoples Month and the 27th Year IPRA Commemoration

The Philippines, this October, marks National Indigenous Peoples Month, where rights, culture, and contributions of the indigenous communities are given much focus. This year's observation coincides with the 27th anniversary of the IPRA, enacted in 1997 to protect indigenous peoples' rights to their land, culture, and identity. The theme for 2024, "Mga Katutubo at Katutubong Dunong: Pahalagahan, Pangalagaan at Parangalana," pushes for the appreciation and nourishment of indigenous peoples as well as their traditional knowledge.

Generationally passed down, indigenous knowledge systems have much to share regarding the way of sustainable living and ecologic conservation along with preservation of culture. By holding this month-long observance, the provisions of IPRA will be strengthened that is an aspect of ancestral domains, self-determination, and the activeness of societal decisions are protected. In fact, it is highly imperative in the empowerment of indigenous peoples and their survival culturally amid a modernizing world.

The celebration also calls attention to mutual respect and understanding between indigenous and non-indigenous populations. In that regard, Indigenous Peoples Month fosters an inclusive environment by celebrating indigenous traditions in light of their contributions toward environmental sustainability and national development.
